Mujir a-Din (1456-1522)
Jerusalem historian and qadi. Ayub al-Yumn 'Abd a-Rahman
ben Muhammad Mujir a-Din al-'Omar al-Hanbali al-Maqdisi,
known simply as Mujir a-Din, was an Arab historian of the
14th century who lived during the Mameluke period. Born in
Jerusalem, Mujir a-Din studied in Cairo, but returned to Je-
rusalem to serve as chief qadi, or chief justice, from 1486-
1516. The most celebrated of Mujir a-Din's writings "The
Wonderful Guide to the History of Jerusalem and Hebron",
is an invaluable work of documentation of this period of Je-
rusalem history. Mujir a-Din's grave in the city can be visited
today.
